A traditional Marseille soapcomes in the form of a large cube of 600 grams, on which are engraved the words "72% oil" and the name of the soap factory. The brown-green artisanal soap is made of olive oil, copra oil, and sunflower oil . The white Marseille Soap is composed of peanut oil, copra oil, and palm oil. BIODEGRADABLE HAS 100 % and designed without guaranteed palm oil or preservatives. . The artisanal soap contains neither perfume nor dye nor additive of synthesis. On the other hand, industrial Marseille soap contains additives, colorants, and perfumes.

The history genuine Marseille Soap

The history of Marseille soap goes back through the centuries and traces of the first mixtures, based on oil, water, and ashes can be found in antiquity. 

A story that began on the shores of the Mediterranean and which today spans the entire world.
It is in the Middle Ages that the manufacturing process was invented, by adding lime to the leached ashes. Marseille soap will become historical and acquire its letters of nobility in Marseille, to the point of giving its name to the manufacturing process. At the end of the 16th century, the soap industry was born from small family businesses in Marseille.
This region: the South and Provence, has indeed the raw materials necessary to the manufacture of the Real Marseille Soap: olive oil, salt, and ashes of salicorne of the Camargue. Industrial production developed from the 17th century, with the creation of the first Marseilles factory by Georges Prunemoyr, in 1593. It is in the 19th century that the profession of soap maker was organized and the Phocaean City asserts itself as the main place of production.
At that time, Marseille had dozens of soap factories, each with own brand.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the city of Marseille had 90 soap factories. This flourishing industry reached its peak in 1913, with a production of 180,000 tons of soap.

It is after the 1st World War that production starts to decline.

After 1950, the arrival of synthetic detergents will sound the death knell of soap bars.

Today, Marseille soap has a positive image of naturalness, simplicity, and cleanliness, known as "the old way". However, there are only a few artisanal soap factories in the Marseille area.

Artisanal manufacturing process

The artisanal production of genuine Marseille Soap takes three weeks and involves several steps:
- mashing: the fats and caustic soda are boiled with pure water and salt water in vats.

- cooking: the paste obtained is brought to a boil and the second addition of caustic soda transforms all the fat into soap.

- the release: the mixture obtained is divided into 2 layers Soap and glycerin.

- the washing: the excess of caustic soda is eliminated with salt water + the liquidation: after a time of rest, the best part of the soap paste (the "smooth soap") is sent to the finishing, the finishing includes 4 steps: solidification, cutting, molding of the soap bars and packaging.

Perfume your clothes: Put a piece of Marseille soap at the bottom of your wardrobe.
Repel moths: Place a piece of Marseille soap in the middle of your clothes, it will act as a moth repellent.
Satin your skin: use your Marseille soap to exfoliate your skin in a hammam.
